Michele Shelly ( Born: Diane Miscavige née Barnett) is the wife of the Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige. She was last seen in public in August 2007.

Actress Leah Remini, a former Scientologist and vocal critic of the organization, filed a missing person report regarding Miscavige with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 2013. According to a story in the Los Angeles Times based on information from an anonymous LAPD source, the LAPD contacted Miscavige and subsequently closed the case.

She is a member of the Sea Org, the organization responsible for the international management of the Church of Scientology and its affiliated entities. From the age of 12, she was a member of the Commodore’s Messenger Organization (CMO), the internal Sea Org group responsible for personally servicing Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard aboard his flagship MVApollo in the 1970s.

She was described as “quiet, petite and younger than most of the other Messengers at the time … and a bit overshadowed by the older girls.”Jim Dincalci, one of her shipmates, says that she was “a sweet, innocent thing thrown into chaos.” At the age of 21, on December 1982, she married a fellow CMO member, 22-year-old David Miscavige.

She subsequently joined her husband’s group as “COB Assistant”, the official assistant to her husband, the Chairman of the Board (COB) of Scientology’s Religious Technology Center. According to author Lawrence Wright, she was closely involved in the Church’s liaison with its highest-profile member, Tom Cruise. When Cruise began a three-year relationship with Penélope Cruz, Miscavige supervised Cruz’s auditing and helped her through the Church’s Purification Rundown program.

After the end of the Cruise-Cruz relationship, Miscavige was reported to have led a Church program to find a new girlfriend for Tom Cruise. Around a hundred young Scientologist actresses were interviewed, though they were not told why. An actress named Nazanin Boniadi was introduced to Cruise and dated him for a few months before he broke off the relationship in January 2005.

The search resumed, with more actresses invited to audition for what they thought was a role in a forthcoming Mission: Impossible film, and eventually concluded with Katie Holmes meeting and marrying Cruise. His attorney denies that any Scientology executive set him up with girlfriends. Miscavige subsequently oversaw a project to use Scientology members and contractors to renovate Cruise’s nine-bedroom mansion in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

Michele Diane Barnett was born in Dallas, Texas, U.S. Her’s mother, Mary Florence “Flo” Fike Barnett, was a long-time Scientologist. On September 8. 1985, 52-year-old Flo Barnett was found dead from three “somewhat superficial” rifle shots to the chest and a fatal shot to the head. The autopsy also reported that there were slash marks on her wrists that may have been a few days old. The death was ruled a suicide. Miscavige’s father, Maurice Elliott Barnett, died in 2007.

a lifelong member of Scientology who spent three years serving as the personal aide to Shelly Miscavige has filed a lawsuit against the controversial religious organization.

The woman, who is identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe, filed a complaint about damages in Los Angeles Superior Court this week that lists 14 causes of action, including false imprisonment, kidnapping, libel, slander, human trafficking, and negligence.

Doe also details her close relationship with the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige and details what had been happening in the days and months leading up to her alleged disappearance.

The court filing alleges that Miscavige ‘became increasingly hostile and verbally abusive towards his wife’ around 2005, and soon after Shelley was removed as her husband’s assistant and Doe were forced to perform manual labor.

Then, in 2006, Doe ‘witnessed a dark-colored tinted vehicle pull up to the main building’ at Scientology’s Gold Base, at which point ‘unidentified men dragged Shelly, who was crying and visibly distraught, out of the building and put her in the car,’ according to the lawsuit.

Shelly has not been seen in public since then and Doe never saw her in the 10 years she remained with the organization, but Scientology spokespersons have always denied reports that she is missing.

Doe spoke about meeting Shelly in an episode of the Leah Remini series Scientology and the Aftermath.

She was also given a job by Remini after the actress learned about Doe’s daring escape from Gold Base in the trunk of a car. ‘One of my first jobs was I was a waitress for the top executives at the Clearwater Flag Land Base,’ said Doe.’ Dave and Shelly came to the opening and I served them, and Shelly was like, ‘oh my gosh I love this girl and I want her to work with me.”

Doe says that she was soon making the move from Clearwater to Gold Base, the home base for the group’s top executives.

‘Shelley was lovely’ said Doe, but everyone else she encountered seemed ‘not happy and frightened’.

Things began to change however in 2005 according to the complaint, which alleges that Miscavige ‘became increasingly hostile and verbally abusive’ towards his wife.

‘In about the third year I was working with Shelly and David, Shelly was just getting more and more in disagreement with David about how he was running the organization, how he was treating the staff,’ said Doe when she appeared on Aftermath.

Soon after, both women reportedly found themselves out of the organization.

‘David Miscavige had Shelly removed from the main office as his secretary/assistant in the Gold Base. Jane Doe, because of her connection to Shelly Miscavige, at the age of 26, was punished by being removed from her position as steward and forced into the ‘Hole,” Doe alleges in her complaint.

‘The Hole is a set of double-wide trailers on Gold Base where senior executives accused of ‘ethics violations’ were held under strict surveillance. Doe ‘spent three months in the ‘Hole” and ‘was forbidden from having any communication whatsoever with Shelly.’

After those three months, she was ‘forced to do physical and manual labor’ Doe claims in the court filing.

When she finished her manual labor work, Doe began working on promotional videos for the Church, but by 2016 was ready to break free from Scientology according to the lawsuit.

‘Doe submitted written requests to leave to her superiors seven times. All requests were denied,’ reads the complaint.

‘Jane Doe was told by her superiors that if she left she would get cancer and die. On one occasion, Jane Doe was physically restrained and prevented from leaving. As a result of this, Jane Doe suffered mentally and contemplated suicide.’

She eventually got out by hiding in the trunk of a car belonging to an actor she had hired who was not a Scientologist, but says she was persuaded to return.

‘At the age of 37, Jane Doe returned to the CSI (Church of Scientology) to ‘route out,’ in an effort to not lose all connection with her family. Instead of doing what was agreed upon, CSI proceeded to treat Jane Doe like a prisoner,’ states the complaint.

‘Jane Doe was forced to do everything with the accompaniment of a ‘handler,’ including using the bathroom, showering and sleeping. She was made to do videotaped interrogations in which she was forced to make false confessions and provide false positive testimonials about her experiences with CSI.

‘Jane Doe was held for three months, not three weeks as she was told. Jane Doe was rarely permitted to leave. During this time, Jane Doe’s grandmother died, and she was not even allowed to leave for the funeral.’

Doe’s attorney Brian Kent said that this is just the first of many lawsuits his firm plans to file against the Church of Scientology.

‘Scientology for decades has sought to quash dissention, cover up its long history of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of its members, including its most vulnerable members, its children, and weaponize its doctrine against those who escape and find the courage to speak up,’ said Kent.

‘This is just the beginning and we are not going to stop until they do.’

The Church of Scientology did not respond to request for comment, but a member of the organization’s legal team did speak with NBC News on Wednesday.

‘The lawsuit comprises nothing more than unfounded allegations as to all defendants,’ said Rebecca N. Kaufman,.

The attorney also said that the filing was ‘littered with anti-religious slurs culled from the tabloids and accusations that have been disproven in courts decades ago.

‘We are confident the lawsuit will fail,’ Kaufman said. ‘Federal courts have already determined that service in the Church of Scientology’s religious order is voluntary and protected by the First Amendment.

‘Moreover, the evidence will establish that while serving the church, plaintiff came and went freely, traveled the world, and lived in comfortable surroundings. The church will vigorously defend itself against these unfounded allegations.’

Where Is Shelly Miscavige? New Details About Scientology Leader David Miscavige’s Wife Who Hasn’t Been Seen Publicly In Years

Scientology leader David Miscavige’s wife has not been seen publicly in 13 years — and some fear she will never be seen again. Shelly Miscavige, dubbed the “Queen of Scientology,” was last seen at her father’s funeral in 2007. Her husband’s father, Ron Miscavige, who left the church in 2012, fears Shelly will “never be free.”

“These are pretty bad people, but they don’t have a conscience and that lets them do it,” he told 60 Minutes reporter Tara Brown in an interview Sunday. Shelly and David took leadership of the church in 1986 after the death of Scientology founder L. Rob Hubbard. Despite their high-profile status in the church, only David has made public appearances in recent years, never addressing the question haunting Shelly’s friends and family: Where is Shelly Miscavige?

Leah Rimini believes the church is hiding something.

Actress Leah Remini, a friend of Shelly who defected from Scientology years ago, has reason to believe the church is hiding something in regards to Shelly’s disappearance.

“‘Shelly is fine, and she’s alive.’ … That’s the PR line. I don’t believe that” she shared on 60 Minutes on Sunday.

There have been many theories as to what happened to Shelly, but none have been met with answers. The questions about Shelly’s whereabouts have, though, been met with fiery responses from the church.

“Ron Miscavige is seeking to make money on the name of his famous son. Any father exploiting his son in this manner is a sad exercise in betrayal,” the Church of Scientology said in a statement to Page Six Sunday. “Leah Remini has been stalking Mr. and Mrs. Miscavige for years because of her psychotic obsession. It is time for her to stop.”

Adding to the concern is the multitude of complaints and accusations against the Church of Scientology over the years, including claims of sexual assault, abuse, and being held prisoner by the cult-like church.

She was last seen at her father’s funeral.

Shelly made her last public appearance following the death of her father. She attended his funeral in 2007, where she was heavily escorted and has reportedly not been seen since. But prior to the funeral, Shelly was last seen in 2005, raising questions as to where she was for the almost two years leading up to her father’s funeral.

Her relationship with her husband was business-like.

According to those who were close to the Miscavige’s, David seemed more like Shelly’s boss than a husband, a 2014 report by Vanity Fair revealed.

“I never, ever, ever saw them kiss,” said Marc Headley, who with the Miscavige’s for over a decade. “I was there for 15 years… So I had plenty of opportunities to witness them together and never, ever saw them affectionate with each other… I’m talking about in a room with four other people. Informal. We’re all just chatting, and he isn’t touching her.”

After they married, Shelly was appointed to Chairman of the Board Assistant, which put her in charge of the executive staff at the church. Throughout her time as a C.O.B. Assistant, others noticed her and her husband’s relationship seemed anything but romantic. The pair even reportedly slept in separate beds in different rooms.

“Odd, odd couple,” said former Sea Org member, Tom De Vocht. “There was obviously a working relationship, but odd. I don’t think I once saw Miscavige hug or kiss or anything Shelly. I spent a lot of time with them. There was no real affection.”

She may have been banished by her husband.

Many ex-Scientologists believe Shelly was exiled by David to live in a compound with no contact with the outside world. The church, when questioned by its members about Shelly’s location, held on to answers like, “She’s on a special project” or “She’s visiting relatives,” but many did not see the truth in its responses.

“The law [in Scientology] is: The closer to David Miscavige you get, the harder you’re going to fall,” Claire Headley, an ex-Scientologist who worked closely with the Miscavige’s with her husband, Marc, explained to Vanity Fair in 2014. “It’s like the law of gravity, practically. It’s just a matter of when.”

It quickly became as though Shelly did not exist and her sudden disappearance was never discussed by church members.

No one wanted to talk about her disappearance.

In 2006, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married and their wedding was considered “the wedding of the century in the church,” according to Remini. But Shelly was not there, and no one would answer Remini when she asked why.

“I asked innocently, ‘where’s Shelly?’ because I thought it was odd,” Leah said on Conan. “They were calling it the wedding of the century in the church… And with that, there was a reaction of people just scattering. They didn’t want any part of this. Literally just scattered.”

Remini said she was belittled by church officials for even asking about her friend’s whereabouts.

“I had gone to the church and I asked the spokesperson at the time, Tom Davis, ‘Where is Shelly? I think it’s weird she’s not here,’” Leah continued. “And he said, ‘You don’t have the f—ing rank to be asking about the leader’s wife.’”

She was reported missing in 2013.

Remini left the Church of Scientology in 2013. At this point, she had not seen Shelly in eight years and was determined to find out where she went — and if she was still alive.

Remini filed a missing person report with the Los Angeles Police Department, but nothing ever became of it. The LAPD said the report was “unfounded,” according to 9News, and did not lead to any answers regarding Shelly’s whereabouts or disappearance. Police said that they met with Shelly and closed the case. The church has since claimed Remini’s police report was filed in bad faith and questioned the ex-scientologist’s credibility.

“What matters to me is that I have not seen proof that this woman is alive, or doing well, so I can give a shit what the LAPD said as their bullshit statement that they put out because I haven’t seen her face. I’m calling bullshit on it,” Remini told the Daily Beast in 2017.

It is possible she is dead.

In a December 2016 episode of her A&E series Scientology and the Aftermath, Remini revealed that she believes her friend may be dead.

“I do NOT know that she is alive,” she said, adding that she would be happy to be proven wrong. But until then, Remini is dedicated to finding the truth about Shelly and her disappearance. “I’m going to continue to get and gather information,” she vowed.

Some believe she is being held against her will.

Tony Ortega, the world’s premier reporter on Scientology, is convinced Shelly is being held at the Church of Spiritual Technology (CST), a complex near Lake Arrowhead, CA, where Scientologist are readying themselves for Armageddon, he told the Daily Beast in 2015. He and Mike Rinder, a former senior executive in the church, believe Shelly is locked up in the bunkers and vaults of the compound and is not allowed to leave.

“Mike and I are pretty positive that in 2005, once Dave had his blow-up with her, he sent her up there to be a non-person,” Ortega said. “They let her out for a couple of days for her father’s funeral in the summer of 2007, and nobody has seen her since. I’m positive she’s still there, and I have my sources saying that she’s still there.”

Scientology leader David Miscavige’s wife not missing, police say

The Los Angeles Police Department has closed its inquiry into the whereabouts of the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, saying that an allegation that she was missing was unfounded. The location of Miscavige’s wife, Shelly, had come under police investigation after actress Leah Remini, who recently left the Church of Scientology, filed a missing person report, a source close to the actress said.

The LAPD would not say who filed the report or when.

“The investigation has been closed and we consider the report to be unfounded,” Los Angeles Police Detective Gus Villanueva said. Shelly Miscavige’s whereabouts have been a focus of church critics, who claim she has not appeared in public in six years.

By filing the report with the police, Remini could have posed a challenge to the church, which relies heavily on its celebrity members for visibility. Tom Cruise and John Travolta are among the most well-known members and only a handful of celebrities have left.

Remini, 43, best known for the CBS comedy The King of Queens, left the church after coming under special scrutiny after she asked about the whereabouts of Shelly Miscavige, the New York Post newspaper reported. Remini had asked why Shelly Miscavige was not at the 2006 wedding of Cruise to actress Katie Holmes, the newspaper said.

The Church of Scientology, which has said in the past that Shelly Miscavige is not missing and has been working “non-stop” in the church, called the reports “harassment”.

“It is a publicity stunt cooked up by a small band of unemployed fanatics who live on the fringe of the internet,” it said. The religion, founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, believes man is an immortal being whose experience extends beyond one lifetime.
